Tienen los diferentes terrenos una propiedad - ángulo de rozamiento -de la que depende el grado de inclinación que adquiere el mismo cuando está en reposo. Éste depende de la fricción entre las partículas que conforman dicho terreno; en el desierto, la arena es moldeada caprichosamente, sumando la fuerza del viento a su inclinación natural conformando de manera aleatoria formas sinuosas y sugerentes, siempre cambiantes que denominamos dunas.
Es el desierto un lugar extraño, que pese a ser hostil a cualquier forma de vida, ejerce una atracción un tanto irracional al hombre, no solo por la riqueza que esconde, sino por el desafío que representa en sí mismo.
